Maths - Recapping counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s, number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, and number facts9/13/2020 When lockdown happened in March, most school children were learning from home using a variety of different means. Often, learning wasn't co-ordinated, so one child might learn one thing and another something completely different. The activities below will help Year 3 teachers begin to find a baseline for their new cohorts with regards to "Counting" objectives. This lesson is a fun whistlestop tour of counting objectives, number bonds and number facts - all learning outcomes that children should know from their infant curriculum. It culminates in a set of number bond questions to write in books/on paper, with answers provided. You will need whiteboards/something to write on. You will need Powerpoint to open this lesson. You will need something to write with and some paper (ideally lined). You may also like to illustrate your work with coloured pencils or felt tips.
Imagine that you are Noah from the story of Noah’s Ark. How would you feel to be chosen by God to be the saviour of all of the animals on Earth? For one minute, write down all of the words that you can think of that might describe your feelings at this time. Keep those words handy. You’ll need them later. Now think how would it feel to make an ark out of wood? Is it easy to do? Is it difficult? How does the wood feel against your fingertips? How heavy are your tools? What are they made of? Write down all the words that might describe your senses at this time. Keep those words too. It’s been a few weeks. You now need to round up the animals before the flood arrives. How do you feel? Anxious? Prepared? How does it feel to only round up two of each animal, knowing the rest of the animals will likely not survive the flood? Write any thoughts, feelings or senses that spring to mind. And keep those words. Your task is to write one of the following four pages from Noah’s personal diary. The first entry is the day he is told by God to build the ark. The second is during the building of his ark. The third will be Noah rounding up the animals. The final entry is the day the flood came. If you’re feeling extra creative, you may decided to write more than one day or represent it in a different way, like a vlog (video) or a blog. Here is a sample of my efforts. 23rd March Today was a strange old day. While it began in a perfectly ordinary way, something weird happened that I’m still at a loss to explain. God, the father in heaven, the mighty one that created the Earth and everything in it, randomly appeared to me. Pop! Yep, the big man himself, massive and powerful, complete with his bushy grey beard and long, flowing, white robes. And that’s not even the strange bit. He told me that he was absolutely livid at humanity, that we had squandered the wonderful gifts that he had created for us. It was quite scary. I felt like arguing back but before I did he told me that he thought I had lived a good, kind, generous life so far and that subsequently he was choosing me to be the saviour of all the animals on the planet. I’m not ashamed to say that I nearly fainted with the pure shock of it. Why not illustrate your diary entry? I look forward to seeing what you come up with! |
